Heartbreak at Home: TCHS Soccer Seasons End in 2nd Round
It was a tough week on the pitch in Lyons as both the Toombs County High School girls and boys soccer teams saw their seasons come to a close. Playing at home in the second round of the GHSA State Soccer Playoffs, both squads fought to the final whistle but ultimately suffered narrow, one-goal defeats.
Girls vs. Jeff Davis
The Lady Bulldogs took the field on Tuesday against the Jeff Davis Lady Yellow Jackets. The two teams played to a standstill in a tense, scoreless first half. The Lady Yellow Jackets eventually broke the stalemate in the second half, putting two goals in the back of the net. Kanijah Toby provided the offensive spark for Toombs County, scoring the team's only goal, but they ultimately fell short in a 2-1 loss.
The Lady Bulldogs wrapped up a strong campaign with a final overall record of 11-6.
Boys vs. Jasper Co.
On Wednesday, the boys team faced a similarly tough exit against the Jasper County Hurricanes. Jasper County pushed the pace early, striking twice in the first half. Toombs managed to answer with one of their own before the break, sending the game into halftime with the Hurricanes clinging to a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs showed plenty of grit in the second half, mounting a rally that yielded two more goals. However, the Hurricanes matched them, adding two more scores of their own to escape with a 4-3 victory.
Luan Luna, Osvaldo Tinoco, and Palmer Davis each found the net for Toombs County in the hard-fought battle. The boys concluded their year with a solid 10-6 record.
