MCHS Soccer Falls In Tough 2nd Round Matchups

The Montgomery County High School soccer seasons came to a close last week in the second round of the GHSA State Playoffs. Both the Eagles and Lady Eagles faced steep competition, drawing matchups against top-five ranked opponents. Despite showing plenty of grit on the pitch, both squads saw their postseason journeys come to an end.

Girls vs. Screven

The Lady Eagles drew a particularly tough assignment in the #2 ranked Lady Gamecocks of Screven County, a team that entered the contest boasting a formidable 17-1 record. Montgomery refused to back down and gave the heavy favorites everything they could handle in a tightly contested, defensive battle.

Screven managed to break through for a single goal in the first half, taking a slim 1-0 lead into the break. In the second half, the Lady Eagles found the back of the net to keep the pressure on, but the Lady Gamecocks managed to match the effort with another goal of their own. Screven held on to edge out a 2-1 victory.

The hard-fought loss wrapped up a strong season for the Lady Eagles, who finished the year with a commendable 10-5 overall record.

Boys vs. Atkinson

On the boys' side, the Eagles faced off against the #5 ranked Atkinson County Rebels. It was a tough night for Montgomery, as the Rebels' offense proved to be too much right out of the gate.

Atkinson poured it on early, controlling the tempo and putting nine goals on the board before halftime. The Rebels added one more in the second half to trigger the mercy rule, closing out the game with a 10-0 win. The loss dropped the Eagles' final season record to 8-7.

While the playoff exits undoubtedly sting for the players and coaching staff, both Montgomery County squads put in solid campaigns this year to make it to the second round.
