day and 75 showed up to help us clean up. It just goes to show how important a clean city is to the citizens of this community.”
Volunteer groups – gloves on and trash bags in hand – were dispatched to several areas of the community. Within just one hour of picking up litter, the groups had removed 5 tires and 70 bags of trash from Ezra Taylor Road, 6 tires and 28 bags of trash from Cadillac Drive, 7 bags of trash from U.S. Highway 280, 5 bags of trash from Arnau Street, and 4 bags of trash from Downtown Vidalia. A total of 11 tires and 114 bags of trash were collected in the city.
The Keep it Clean Vidalia project got a big boost this week when the City installed bright red Keep It Clean markers to existing littering signs throughout the city warning of up to $1000 in fines for littering. The metal Keep it Clean signs will be attached permanently to street signs and will reduce the use of floppy signs, which were used in the beginning to promote the litter clean up campaign. These permanent signs, located on streets throughout the city, will serve as a constant reminder to keep our community free of litter and debris.
Citizens have voiced concerns that the “floppies” are an “eyesore” and compromise the objective of the clean up project. With that consideration in mind, the Keep It Clean Committee encourages citizens to strategically place their Keep It Clean yard signs away from the streets and thoroughfares and closer to their residences as a continuing show of support for the initiative. The Vidalia Mayor and City Council have approved funds for adding the Keep It Clean markers to the existing signs and funding for additional signs to be added. The Keep it Clean Vidalia committee is continuing to work to eliminate litter in the city. To join the effort, contact Howard Holman at (912) 293-1199.
