Vikings Fall To Mt. Zion

The Treutlen County High School Vikings' football season came to a close last Friday night as they faced the Mt. Zion Eagles in the first round of the GHSA Class A Division II Playoffs. In a game marked by gritty defense and shifts in field position, the Vikings ultimately fell short, losing 20-7.

The game kicked off with both teams trading blows in a tense defensive chess match. The Vikings' initial drive started promisingly from their own 24yard line following the opening kick and moved the ball well at first, but they stalled, forcing a turnover on downs deep in the Eagles' territory. For the better part of the first quarter, neither offense could find traction, resulting in several quick exchanges of possession and punts that kept the scoreboard locked at zero.

The Eagles finally managed to break the defensive deadlock late in the first quarter, punching the ball in for a rushing touchdown and securing the successful point after attempt (PAT) to take a 7-0 lead. Mt. Zion carried that momentum into the second quarter, engineering another successful drive that culminated in a second rushing touchdown and a good PAT, extending their advantage to 14-0 with nine minutes left in the first half.

The rest of the first half saw both teams punt the ball as they couldn't get much else going. The game went to halftime with the Eagles on top, 14-0.

Despite the deficit, the Vikings showed their trademark fighting spirit in the second half. Mt. Zion scored quickly out of the break with their third rushing touchdown, but the missed the extra point, taking a 20-0 lead with 8 minutes still on the clock.

After punting the ball away on their next possession, the Vikings found some luck as they came up with a fumble recovery on the Eagles' 35-yard line with 3 minutes left in the third quarter. Treutlen took advantage and capped of the short drive with a rushing touchdown. They tacked on the PAT to close the lead to 20-7.

The fourth quarter was a testament to the Treutlen defense, which dug in and held the highpowered Mt. Zion offense completely scoreless for the remainder of the contest. While the Vikings fought valiantly to complete the comeback, they were unable to much else going as they lost 20-7.

The 20-7 result officially concludes the Treutlen County Vikings’ 2025 season. The Vikings finish the season with a 6-5 overall record.
