The Vidalia Recreation Department 12U girls team earned a second- place finish at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) District 1 Tournament last week. The three-team event was hosted in Emanuel County from June 6 through June 8.

VRD vs. Emanuel

In the opening round, Vidalia squared off against Emanuel County. The hosts took an early edge, scratching across a run in the bottom of the first inning and adding another in the third to lead 2-0. Vidalia rallied in the top of the fourth, plating four runs to grab a 4-2 lead. However, Emanuel responded with a fiverun bottom of the fourth to reclaim control. Emanuel managed to hold off Vidalia the rest of the way, taking the game 7-4.

VRD vs. Effingham

Facing elimination, Vidalia matched up with Effingham County in the losers' bracket. The Vidalia offense found its rhythm immediately, hanging 20 runs on the board in the top of the first inning. The early surge was more than enough, as Vidalia cruised to a 20-0 run-rule victory.

VRD vs. Emanuel Championship The blowout win earned Vidalia a rematch with Emanuel County with the Championship on the line. It was a tightly contested matchup, but the Vidalia offense could not find the gaps. Emanuel scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, which turned out to be the only offense of the day for either dugout. Emanuel held on for a 3-0 shutout to claim the title. With the runner-up finish, Vidalia advances to the GRPA State Tournament. The state bracket kicks off next Tuesday in Dalton, GA.
