University of Georgia (UGA) Bulldog fans will have the chance to see rare historic artifacts and relics from the University’s athletic program on Thursday, June 25, as the “UGA Athletics in Your Town” tour stops in Vidalia.
The tour will bring sports memorabilia from numerous sports – such as UGA baseball, women’s tennis, track and field, and football – for the community to see. The oldest piece in the UGA Athletics archive – the famous “Silver Chalice,” which is a trophy awarded to the UGA Football Team in 1894, before they were even known as the Bulldogs, after a victory over Auburn University – will be on display, along with tickets and a program from the first game ever played at Sanford Stadium in 1992, a handwritten playbook from the Wally Butts era, and football helmets from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1980s.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Georgia fans and alumni to see historic artifacts from multiple sports and from many different eras,” emphasized Athletics History Specialist Jason Hasty. “These artifacts are available to the public to view year-round in the Special Collections Libraries Building in Athens, but it’s great to be able to take them to communities around the state this summer for all Georgia supporters to enjoy.”
Vidalia is one of eight stops on the summer tour, as the relics travel throughout the state to Suwanee, LaGrange, Carrolton, Warner Robins, Alpharetta, Cartersville, and Rome.
Community members can view the artifacts at the Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey Public Library, located at 610 Jackson Street in Vidalia, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 25. Entry to the exhibit is free; you do not have to have a library card to attend.
