The Mentor Toombs program is continuing to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young students across Toombs County Schools as the initiative completes its second successful year. Focused on first and second grade students at Lyons Primary School, the program connects community volunteers with children to encourage literacy development and build positive relationships.
Since its beginning, the program has received strong support from school administrators, staff, and community leaders who recognize the importance of investing in young students.
Many of the current mentors were recently recognized during the Lyons Primary School Honors Day program for their dedication, time, and commitment to childhood literacy. Their efforts have become an important part of the school community, helping students gain confidence both in reading and in themselves.
Each week, mentors spend an hour visiting with students, reading together, practicing literacy skills, and simply offering encouragement and friendship. The consistent interaction not only strengthens reading abilities, but also helps students develop trust, communication skills, and a love for learning.
School leaders say the program’s success comes from the caring individuals who invest their time in students each week, along with the continued support shown by the school system and community. Mentors serve as positive role models while creating meaningful connections that can have a lasting impact on a child’s educational journey.
The Mentor Toombs program is overseen by Rhonda Benton, Parent Engagement Coordinator for Toombs County Schools, along with Paige Partin, Toombs Co. Family Connection Director. Together, they continue working to expand community involvement and support student success through literacy and mentorship initiatives. As the program enters its third year, organizers hope even more community members will become involved in helping young readers grow and succeed.
