Lyons Beats Vidalia For 12U Boys Title

The Lyons and Vidalia Recreation Department 12U boys baseball teams brought their local rivalry to the regional stage last week, battling through the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) District 1 Tournament in Effingham County. When the tournament concluded its June 6-10 run, the Lyons boys stood in first place, capturing the district title over a resilient Vidalia squad that fought its way out of the losers' bracket to claim second.
VRD vs. Emanuel
Vidalia opened the tournament with a frustrating draw against Emanuel County, struggling to find a rhythm at the plate. Emanuel struck early with a run in the first inning and blew the game open with five more in the third. Though Vidalia managed to plate a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth, Emanuel answered every push, ultimately handing Vidalia a tough 10-3 loss and sending them into the elimination bracket.
LRD vs. Effingham #2
Lyons, on the other hand, made quick work of their opening matchup against Effingham County #2. The offense exploded immediately, hanging a staggering 17 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The defense took care of the rest, holding Effingham scoreless over the next two frames to secure an easy 17-0 run-rule victory.
LRD vs. Emanuel
Moving deeper into the winners' bracket, Lyons faced Emanuel County. Emanuel drew first blood with a run in the top of the first, but the Lyons bats answered quickly with three in the bottom half of the frame. Lyons kept the pressure on, adding five runs in the second and one in the third to build a commanding 9-1 advantage. Emanuel managed to claw back with four combined runs across the fourth and fifth innings, but Lyons shut the door with a four-run fifth inning to seal a 13-5 win.
LRD vs. Effingham #1
That victory pushed Lyons into the semifinals against Effingham County #1. Effingham managed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lyons pitching staff locked in, throwing zeros the rest of the way. The Lyons offense woke up with a pair of runs in the second inning before breaking the game wide open with a seven-run third. Two more runs in the fourth cemented an 11-1 victory and earned Lyons an automatic bid to the Championship.
VRD vs. Effingham #2
Meanwhile, facing a long road through the losers' bracket, Vidalia found their swing. They dismantled Effingham #2 in a lopsided affair, plating 11 runs in the opening frame and adding 10 more in the second to cruise to a dominant 21-0 shutout.
VRD vs. Bulloch
`Vidalia carried that offensive momentum right into their next matchup, blowing past Bulloch County. Bulloch threatened early with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Vidalia rallied to tie things up in the second and pulled ahead 5-2 in the third. The floodgates opened late in the game, with Vidalia scoring six in the fourth and exploding for 11 runs in the fifth to walk away with a massive 22-2 win.
VRD vs. Emanuel
The next round offered Vidalia a shot at redemption against the Emanuel County squad that had sent them to the losers' bracket on opening day. It was a gritty, back-and-forth contest. Emanuel struck first, but Vidalia answered with two in the bottom of the first. Emanuel regained the lead in the second, and Vidalia fought back to tie it 3-3 in the fourth. After Emanuel edged ahead 4-3 in the fifth, Vidalia finally broke through. They rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead, and the defense held strong in the sixth to complete the revenge tour.
VRD vs. Effingham #1
Riding high, Vidalia dispatched Effingham County #1 to punch their own ticket to the finals. The Vidalia lineup methodically built a 5-0 lead across the second, third, and fourth innings. In the fifth, they put the game out of reach with a decisive seven-run rally, shutting out Effingham 12-0 by the run rule.
LRD vs. VRD
Championship
That impressive run through the losers' bracket set up an all-local showdown in the Championship game between Lyons and Vidalia. Vidalia struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Lyons immediately countered with two of their own.
Vidalia showed their resilience again in the third, plating three runs to take a 4-2 advantage. However, the Lyons offense was just too much to hold down. Lyons answered with a pivotal four-run bottom of the third to reclaim the lead at 6-4, and added four final insurance runs in the fourth to secure a 10-4 victory and the district title.
With both squads proving their mettle by claiming first and second place in the district, the baseball season continues for the local boys. Both Lyons and Vidalia will advance to represent the area in the State Tournament, which kicks off next Tuesday in Statesboro.
