The Vidalia Indians boys tennis team put together an outstanding season this spring, finishing as Region Runner-Up and advancing to the Sweet 16 in the GHSA State Playoffs.
The Indians earned their spot in the region championship with a hardfought 3-2 victory over Swainsboro. Vidalia’s depth proved to be the difference, as second singles player Larsen Carter delivered a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win, while third singles standout Stone Smith followed with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory. The clinching point came from the second doubles team of Caiden Beasley and Sam Varn, who showed poise in a tight match, winning 6-2, 7-5.
Vidalia ultimately fell to Savannah Country Day in the region championship match, finishing as runnerup, but the strong performance secured the Indians the No. 11 seed in the state playoffs and the opportunity to host a first-round match.
On their home courts, the Indians took full advantage, defeating Bacon County 4-1 in the opening round. Senior Caleb Beck led the charge at first singles with a gritty 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory. Fellow senior Larsen Carter battled through a three-set match at second singles, winning 6-1, 6-7 (3-6), 6-4. Junior Stone Smith continued his strong postseason play with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles. The final point came from the reliable second doubles team of Beasley and Varn, who secured a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
The win propelled Vidalia into the Sweet 16, where they faced No. 6 seed Rabun County. Despite several tightly contested sets, the Indians were unable to come away with the victory, bringing their successful season to a close.
Coach McLeod praised his team’s effort and leadership throughout the year, particularly highlighting seniors Caleb Beck and Larsen Carter. “They led us not only at the top of the lineup, but with their character and leadership every day,” McLeod said.
With a strong core returning, the future looks bright for Vidalia tennis. Juniors Stone Smith, Cooper McCallum, and Caiden Beasley, along with sophomores Sam Varn, Diego Medina, and freshman Fisher Mobley set to lead the next chapter for the Indians.
After a season defined by resilience, teamwork, and growth, the Vidalia Indians have laid a solid foundation for continued success in the years to come.
