Vidalia Golf Sweeps Region Titles After Thrilling Ryder Cup Victory Over Toombs

It has been a grueling and highly rewarding two weeks for the Vidalia High School golf program. The Indians captured back-toback Region Championships for both the boys and girls teams, carrying the momentum from a dramatic, two-hole playoff victory over rival Toombs County in the Annual Rivalry Ryder Cup.
Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup matchup against Toombs County at Brazell's Creek Golf Course in Reidsville, proved to be a grind from the start. Day one featured a scramble format that ended in a 2.5-2.5 point deadlock. The Vidalia girls picked up crucial wins, with Skylar Fountain and Sallie Wilcox defeating Toombs' Sarah Ellis Walker and Jean Peterson, while Rileigh Scott and Riley Norfleet took down Toombs' Anzley Bryant and Anni Thursby.
On the boys' side, Vidalia's Austin Mosley and Brayden Mulkey managed a tie against Toombs' Vic Moore and Drew Woodruff. Vidalia's Tucker Reynolds and Benton Johnson dropped their match to Toombs' Rhys Ward and Noah Anken, and Vidalia's Braylen Coursey and Landon Henry fell to Toombs' Gavin Ward and Clarke Brannon.
The tension only increased during the second day of individual play, which ultimately ended in a 7.5-7.5 tie. Vidalia secured individual victories from Landon Henry over Clarke Brannon, Tucker Reynolds over Noah Anken, Austin Mosley over Rhys Ward, Skylar Fountain over Anzley Bryant, and Rileigh Scott over Jean Peterson. But tough losses from Braylen Coursey, Benton Johnson, Brayden Mulkey, Sally Wilcox, and Riley Norfleet forced a sudden-death scenario.
The championship came down to the top two golfers from each boys team in a combined-score playoff. On the first playoff hole, number nine, Vidalia’s Reynolds bogeyed while Mosley parred for a team total of one-over. Toombs matched that effort with a par from Moore and a bogey from Anken. The match moved to hole number eight at Reidsville for the second playoff. Reynolds and Mosley both sank steady par putts to finish even, while Moore bogeyed and Anken parred for Toombs. The onestroke difference gave Vidalia the Ryder Cup trophy.
Region The Indians didn't let up when they transitioned to the Region Tournament, leaning on solid individual performances to sweep the titles.
The boys posted a team score of 326 behind their top four finishers. Reynolds led the way with a 76, earning him region low medalist runner-up honors. Johnson carded a 77, Mosley shot an 85, and Mulkey finished with an 88. Henry and Coursey rounded out the boys' effort with an 89 and a 91, respectively.
The Lady Indians secured their back-to-back region championship with a dominant showing of their own. Skylar Fountain shot an 84, capturing the region low medalist title for the second consecutive year. Rileigh Scott followed up with a 93 to earn third low medalist overall.
Now, Vidalia sets its sights on the state's biggest stage. Both teams will travel to Elberton, Georgia, to compete in the GHSA State Golf Tournament held at Arrowhead State Park on May 18 and 19.
