RTCA Welcomes Coach Spurlock

Robert Toombs Christian Academy is proud to announce our new Head Football Coach, Sonny Spurlock. Coach Spurlock brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and leadership to our program, and we are excited about the future under his direction!

Originally from Hartwell, Georgia, Coach Spurlock graduated from Hart County High School in 1990 as a 4 year letterman in baseball, three year letterman at quarterback, and an All-Northeast Georgia selection as well as Academic All-State. From there Coach Spurlock continued his education at Lenoir-Rhyne College, earning a B.A. in Physical Education while playing baseball and earning 3 letters in football. Coach Spurlock also holds a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Georgia Southern University and an Ed.S. in Educational Administration from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. Coach Spurlock started his coaching career as an assistant football coach and head baseball coach at Forest Park High School in 1994. Coach Spurlock’s career had many different stops including Hart County, Tucker, Lamar County, Ware County and most recently at Lincoln County and Burke County. During his 30 years as an assistant and head football coach, Coach Spurlock has instructed many current and former collegiate and NFL players. He has been named GACA Region Assistant Coach of the Year fifteen times and State Assistant Coach of the Year twice. Coach Spurlock has coached in 71 playoff games, including four state title games and ten semifinals.

Coach Spurlock currently resides in Vidalia and is an active member at Connection Church. He and his late wife Mollie have four wonderful children, sons Harrison (27) and Hudson (24), and daughters Madelyn (25) and Riley (21).

A luncheon was held on Thursday of last week at Hardware Pizza to welcome Coach Spurlock. He addressed those that were in attendance, and laid out his plans for the team and the facilities.

Spurlock said, “God just continued to place people in my life that led my to Robert Toombs. This was never on my radar, but I’m here for a reason and there is no question in my mind about that.”
