Bulldogs’ Late Rally Falls Short Against Warriors

The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs closed out their baseball season last Thursday, dropping a high-scoring 18-12 battle against the Tattnall County Warriors at home. Despite an early deficit, the Bulldogs showed plenty of fight down the stretch, turning what looked like a rout into a competitive finish.

The game threatened to get out of hand early. Tattnall jumped out of the gate with four runs in the top of the first inning, then broke it open in the second by driving in eight more to build a commanding 12-0 lead. Wheeler managed to scratch out a run in the third, but the Warriors responded with a five-run top of the fourth to extend their advantage to 17-1.

Staring down a massive gap, the Bulldogs refused to quietly pack it in for the year. Wheeler answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the game, then mounted a five-run surge in the fifth inning. The offensive burst was sparked by solid hits from Brody White and Cason Stokes, and capped off by a threerun homer off the bat of Landyn Horne.

That fifth-inning rally narrowed the gap to 17-9, and the Bulldogs kept grinding, adding three more runs in the sixth to make it a 17-12 ballgame. Ultimately, the early hole proved just a bit too deep to climb out of. Tattnall tacked on a final insurance run in the top of the seventh to secure the 18-12 win.

With the loss, Wheeler County ends the year with a 7-15 overall record. The Bulldogs posted a 5-7 mark in region play, finishing fifth in the region standings and just missing out on a playoff berth.
