Treutlen Splits With Wilcox

The Treutlen County High School Vikings baseball team ran into their first roadblock in Region play last week, splitting a tough twogame series against the Wilcox County Patriots. After pulling off a gritty, extra-inning victory at home on Tuesday, the Vikings traveled to Rochelle on Friday and absorbed a 7-4 loss, marking their first Region defeat of the season.

Game 1

Tuesday’s matchup tested the Vikings' resilience early. Wilcox got on the board first, pushing a run across in the top of the third and adding two more in the fourth to put Treutlen in a 3-0 hole. The Vikings came storming back in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3, fueled by an RBI single from Gavin Bailey and an RBI double from Caden Parrish.

Both pitching staffs dug in, and the score held steady through the seventh to force extra innings. After the Treutlen defense kept the Patriots quiet in the top of the eighth, Jack Walker stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the frame with a runner on. Walker delivered the game-winning RBI single, securing a hard-fought 4-3 victory. It was a complete performance for Walker, who also earned the win on the mound by pitching all eight innings and allowing just six hits.

Game 2

Friday’s road trip proved to be a different story. The Patriots once again took an early advantage, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. Treutlen responded immediately in the top of the third, stringing together an RBI single from Acie Dickens, a sacrifice bunt by Bailey, and a bases-loaded walk to Brylan Ikner to tie things up at 3-3.

Wilcox, however, reclaimed the momentum in the bottom half of the inning with two runs, and then added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-3. The Vikings managed to plate one more run in the top of the fifth, but the offense stalled out from there as the Patriots secured the 7-4 win.

Despite the setback, the Vikings remain in excellent position as the postseason approaches, sitting at 21-5 overall and an impressive 11-1 in Region play. Treutlen traveled to Tattnall County for a nonregion matchup on Tuesday after presstime.

The team will turn its full attention back to Wilcox this Thursday at 5:30 p.m., heading on the road for a high-stakes rematch with first place in the Region squarely on the line. The Vikings will then return home to wrap up the regular season on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with a nonregion contest against Tattnall.
