The Toombs County High School Bulldogs baseball team secured a crucial Region series win last week, taking two out of three games from the Swainsboro Tigers. The series victory keeps the Bulldogs in the thick of the playoff race as they prepare for a pivotal final week of the regular season.

Game 1

Tuesday’s series opener in Lyons provided the most drama of the week, with the Bulldogs surviving a late rally to pull out an 8-7 walk-off win. Swainsboro struck first with a run in the opening frame, but Toombs quickly answered with a two-run single from Ty Hutchinson.

After the Bulldogs tacked on another run in the second to make it 3-1, the Tigers reclaimed a 4-3 lead with a three-run surge in the top of the sixth. Toombs responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Nick Carroll laced an RBI triple and Riley Kersey added an RBI single as part of a four-run rally to put the Bulldogs up 7-4.

Swainsboro refused to fold, plating three runs in the top of the seventh to knot the score at 7-7. That set the stage for Carroll, who delivered the final blow in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off single to seal the victory.

Game 2

Thursday’s matchup in Swainsboro was a more comfortable affair for Toombs, resulting in an 11-5 win. The Bulldogs jumped out early when Brody Benton ripped an RBI double and Lawton Toole followed with an RBI single in the first inning.

Carrying a 4-0 lead into the sixth, the Bulldogs' offense broke the game open with seven runs. Toole, Ryder Sears, Cam Brown, and Joseph Owens all tallied RBI hits in the frame to extend the advantage to 11-0. The Tigers managed a late push, scoring four in the bottom of the sixth and one in the seventh, but the early deficit was too large to overcome.

Game 3

Back in Lyons on Friday, the Tigers managed to salvage the series finale with a 12-1 decision. Swainsboro's bats came alive in the middle innings, pushing across five runs in the third and seven more in the fourth for a commanding 12-0 lead.

Toombs avoided the shutout with an RBI hit from Owens in the bottom of the fifth, but the offense stalled there.

The Bulldogs now sit at 14-11 on the year and 6-3 in Region play, currently holding third place just behind Vidalia. This final week of the regular season brings a critical three-game Region series against those rival Indians. The series opened Tuesday in Vidalia, with results unavailable at presstime. Action returns to Lyons on Thursday at 5:45 p.m., before wrapping up back in Vidalia on Friday evening, also at 5:45 p.m.
