The Altama Museum of Art and History will kick off Black History Month and the Museum’s newest show with an immersive night of art, music, and poetry from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 7.
Throughout February, the Museum will celebrate the Black history and culture, as they showcase their newest exhibit, Expressions in Harmony: A Black History Celebration of Art, Sound, & Story. This new show features photography, paintings, drawings, and poetry, as the Museum displays work by local artists, such as Michelle Anderson, Dayna Stokes, Raven Waters, and even Altama Museum of Art & History Board of Trustees Member Joe Eason.
“I am really excited about this. I really wanted to host this show, and I’m grateful to Joe for helping me organize it,” Museum Executive Director Donna Belcher remarked. “We want the Altama to be a place for all people, and I feel like this show will help to move towards that.”
The show will be on display until February 25, but Belcher said that the best time to view the exhibit will be during the show’s opening on Saturday, February 7. “The show opening will be an immersive experience. Each room will have a different feel so that multiple aspects of this art can be showcased,” she emphasized.
According to Belcher, one room will feature a photography display and live piano music; another room will be filled with paintings of more traditional African style and drums will be played to fill the area. Also, Pastor Latwanda Beal will recite her poetry within the traditional exhibit. Another room will feature more modern, anime-inspired drawings, and other pieces filling all the Museum’s downstairs galleries.
Museum entry is free, but donations are appreciated. The Museum is located at 610 Jackson Street in Vidalia, and is open from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Appointments can also be made to view exhibits outside of the Museum’s scheduled times by calling (912) 537-1911.
