Wheeler Stays Perfect, Wins Over Telfair
The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs continued their dominating season, dismantling the Telfair County Trojans on the road last Friday night for a decisive 35-7 victory. The win keeps the Bulldogs perfect on the season, improving their impressive record to 8-0 overall and they are 4-0 in Region play.
Wheeler County's offense was nearly unstoppable, racking up a total of 372 yards—293 on the ground and 79 through the air.
Senior running back Alvin Ricks was the engine of the offense, delivering a monstrous performance with 20 carries for 206 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. Ricks also added a 45-yard catch, bringing his all-purpose yardage total to a staggering 251.
Senior quarterback Reco Wooten had a hand in every phase of the game. He completed 4-of-8 passes for 79 yards, including 1 touchdown, and added 22 rushing yards. On the defensive side, Wooten snagged an interception and returned it for a touchdown, proving his value on both sides of the ball. He also successfully completed 2, 2-point conversions.
The aerial score came on a 3-yard touchdown catch by junior Jaden Bridges, who also chipped in on defense with 7 tackles and 2 tackles for loss (TFLs).
The Bulldogs’ defense was a formidable force, making life miserable for the Trojans' offense. The unit totaled 9 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 1 interception, and 1 fumble recovery. Senior Justin Culver had a standout night with 88 total yards on offense, complemented by 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery on defense. Senior Laith Davis anchored the defense, leading the team with 9 tackles, 2 of which were TFLs, and 1 sack.
This week the Bulldogs will travel to Rochelle to take on the Patriots of Wilcox County at 7:30 p.m.
