The Toombs County High School soccer teams hit the road over Spring Break for a pair of challenging nonregion matchups, gaining valuable experience as they prepare for the postseason. They faced off with Hebron Christian and Putnam County. vs. Hebron
On Thursday night, the Bulldogs faced topranked Hebron Christian Academy in Atlanta. The Lady Bulldogs fell 10-0 to a dominant Hebron squad, while the boys dropped a 5-0 decision.
“We knew going into these matchups it was going to be tough,” said Coach Jeremy Moore. “Hebron is well-coached and has a ton of talent. Their girls team is probably the best offensive team we’ve seen all season, and their boys are the best overall team we’ve faced. The boys were down 4-0 at the half but responded well in the second, holding Hebron to just one goal. Both of their teams are undefeated and sitting at #1 in the A-AAA private school power rankings — and deservedly so.” vs. Putnam
On Friday, the teams stopped in Eatonton on their way home to take on Putnam County. The Lady Bulldogs bounced back with a strong performance, winning 3-0 behind two goals from Emma Wright and another from Aubrey Gay. The defense stood firm, limiting Putnam County to few chances and preserving the clean sheet.
The boys also responded with grit and determination. After trailing 2-1 at halftime, Toombs scored twice in the second half and shut out Putnam the rest of the way to earn a 3-2 comeback win. Osvaldo Tinoco netted two goals, and Angel Morales added one. Goalkeeper Angel Nino made several key saves in the second half to secure the victory.
“I was proud of how both groups played on the second night of a back-to-back,” added Moore. “It was a long two days — traveling Thursday, playing Thursday night, then traveling another two hours to play again Friday. It was a good mental test for our teams, and I hope this trip pays off for us once playoff time rolls around.”
The Lady Bulldogs are 8-7 on the year and are 2-2 in Region play, while the boys are 10-5 on the year, and they are 1-2 in the Region. The Bulldog soccer teams will be back in action this week with two key Region matches. They faced off with rival Vidalia on the road on Tuesday after presstime. They will be back in action on Friday at home against the Tigers of Swainsboro with the first match at 5:00 p.m.
