The Vidalia chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary announced the top three placements in the local Patriot’s Pen competition during a short ceremony at J.R. Trippe Middle School on Monday, December 16.
Patriot’s Pen gives middle school students a chance to share their patriotism and value of their nation, as each year, contestants write essays on the competition’s annual theme. This year, the contest was structured around the topic of “My Voice in America’s Democracy,” as students shared what they felt their role was in the current government. A total of twelve students entered the competition, and the top three placements were announced at the ceremony on December 16.
J.R. Trippe Middle School Student Samiyah Robinson won first place in the local competition, earning her scholarship funds and advancement to the district competition. If Robinson wins the district competition, she will move on to the state competition and a shot at more scholarship money.
Toombs County Middle School Student Aria Matthews took home second place honors in the local competition, while J.R. Trippe Middle School Student Kaiya Fussel followed closely behind in 3rd place. Both of these winners were recognized during the ceremony on December 16 and were presented with scholarship checks.
The competition will reopen to local middle school students next year, as information will be shared at the beginning of the 2025/2026 school year on how to enter.
