The Toombs County Grand Jury indicted 23 people at its March 12 session, including Robert Lee Presgraves, who was charged with theft by taking and escape for his evasion from authorities in 2022. On May 5, 2022, Presgraves was transported to the Toombs County Courthouse from a rehabilitation facility by Montgomery County deputies, who advised the Toombs County deputies that he often tried to flee. He remained in custody during his sentencing for previous theft and weapons charges, but attacked and overpowered a Toombs County Detention Center jailer after being handcuffed and placed in the jail transport vehicle. He then ran across the street to the Enmarket convenience store and stole a Pineland Paper delivery truck.

Though eyewitnesses were able to identify Presgraves’s direction, as they had seen him travel south on Highway 178 near Johnson Corner Road, the prisoner was able to continue to evade law enforcement. He abandoned the truck, which was found by authorities at the dead end of Mount Moriah Road in Toombs County near the Tattnall County line, but left no trace of his location.

Thirty-five law enforcement officers from several agencies searched the swampy area surrounding the truck, but were never able to pinpoint the suspect’s location. Presgraves was captured nine days later outside of Mount Vernon, as Montgomery County Deputy Matt Mallory saw the escapee walking down Highway 56, around 1.5 miles south of the city. Presgraves did not resist arrest, as he told the officer that he was “tired of running.”

Having been indicted, Presgraves will now enter a plea in the case, which will help to determine whether his case will continue to a trial or a sentencing hearing.
