The Class 2A -Area 3 Championship was held this weekend at Toombs County High School, and in dominating fashion, the TCHS Bulldogs came away as Area Champions. The Mat-Dawgs clinched the Area Championship with four individual Area Champions, six runner-up finishes, and three others placing top four. Each of those wrestlers punching their ticket to the Sectional Tournament this weekend at Putnam County High School. The MatDawgs finished the day with 236.5 points leading runner-up Brantley County’s 171.5 points.

Coach Todd Allen said, “It’s a stepping stone to the next stop, Sectionals. At this point in the season the name of the game is ‘Survive and advance’. We have 13 moving onto the Sectionals and we will be in the room getting better this week to prepare for it.”

In addition to the men’s MatDawg success, the Lady MatDawgs were also competing this weekend at the Area Tournament. Corneisha Bullard was the lone girl MatDawg to qualify for Sectionals. Kylee Edwards narrowly missed qualifying, placing 5th. Bullard qualified in a convincing manner. She spent a total of 1:26 on the mat during her three matches.

“Corneisha is dominant! Her aggressive and pure power is overwhelming for most of her opponents. She proved she is a force to be reckoned with here!” mentioned Coach Allen on Corneisha’s tournament.

Bullard will be back in action Friday, February 9, in Harris County High School for the women’s competition and the men will be in action on Saturday, February 10, in Putnam County for the GHSA Sectional Tournament. A top 6 finish at the Sectional Tournament will qualify them for the GHSA State Tournament in Macon at the Macon Centreplex.

TCHS Bulldogs winning their Area Championship were Wyatt Bunch, Dylan Vetter, Tyson Brantley, Dabvn Wadley, and Corneisha Bullard. Area Runner-Ups were Bruce Agzigian, Slade Landrum, Mike Jones, Gailan Wilds, Hayden Roy, and Brock Nobles.
