TCHS Wins 2, #7 In State

The Toombs County High School Bulldogs basketball teams took on the Bears of Pierce County on Tuesday, and then hosted their rivals, the Vidalia High School Indians, on Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs dropped both of their games, but the boys rolled to wins in both of their contests to improve their record to 15-2 over all and 6-0 in Region play. Toombs sits at #7 in the AA State Rankings.

Girls vs. Pierce

Pierce jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter of the game as they held a 17-3 lead at the buzzer. In the second quarter, the Lady Bulldogs made a run and closed the lead to 23-15 at halftime.

In the second half, though, it was all Pierce. Pierce pulled away to a 4425 lead by the end of the third quarter, and they went on to win the game, 61-30.

Boys vs. Pierce

In a commanding Tuesday matchup, the Bulldogs displayed their dominance with a resounding 68-27 victory over Pierce County. Leading the charge was Dominic Eason with a stellar performance of 22 points, complemented by 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Jesus Quintero also made a significant impact with 13 points, 4 rebounds, an assist, 2 steals, and a block. Juju Cutler contributed 10 points, along with 2 rebounds, an assist, and a block. Gavin Fletcher added 9 points, 3 rebounds, an assist, and a steal, while Junior Bullard rounded out the effort with 4 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists. Maurice (Mo) Oglesby also played a key role with 4 points, 8 rebounds, and a steal.

ons. It was a bit of a slow start for both teams, but VHS held an 8-5 lead after the first quarter of action. In the second quarter, the Lady Indians extended their lead to 19-12 over TCHS.

In the second half, VHS pulled away from Toombs. Vidalia outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-10 in the third quarter to take a 32-20 lead heading to the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter was all Indians as they pulled away to a 61-38 win over the Bulldogs.

TCHS was led by Aniyah McKinnon with 19 points, with Arianna Hill adding 8 points in the loss.

Boys vs. Vidalia

It was all Toombs in the boys game as they showed why they have the #7 ranking in the state. The scoring kick off with Eason thowing down an alley-oop from Quintero. VHS answered back with a pair of free throws, and then they took the lead 6-3 on a three-pointer by Jacaree Washington.VHS led 9-6 before Mike Polke hit a three to tie the game at 9-9 with 4:30 left in the first quarter. Toombs led 11-9 and then were up 15-9 after a basket by Quintero.

With just under two minutes to go in the first quarter, a three by Quintero made it 18-11. Parker Stanley got in on the action with a basket underneath. Eemetrius Cutler added a basket off a rebound, and then with just a couple seconds left in the quarter, Quintero drilled another threepointer to make the score 25-13 at the end of the first.

Toombs was on top 26-14 with just over six minutes to go in the first half of the game. Marion James dropped a basket for Toombs to make it 3114, before DJ Wallace finally got another shot to fall for the Indians to make it 31-16.

With 3:50 left, it was 33-21, but a basket by Quintero and a one from Cutler extended the lead to 40-24 with just a few seconds to go in the first half of the game.

In the third quarter of the game, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 6339, and they went on to win the game, 78-54, over the Indians.

Quintero led Toombs with 36 points on the night, including 9 threepointers. VHS did a good job holding Eason to just 9 points, but Toombs spread the ball around as Stanley also added 9, with Polke and Cutler each scoring 8 points as well.

This week TCHS hosted Brantley County on Tuesday after presstime. They will be back in action on Friday of this week at Dublin at 6:00 p.m. and then will be at Twiggs County on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
