In its regular monthly meeting on February 13, the Wheeler County Board of Education adopted the 2023-2024 school calendar and got an update on two grants totaling $110,000.

During the session, Superintendent Suzanne Couey reported that a state Department of Education safety grant for $50,000 has underwritten the costs of adding additional locking mechanisms for classroom doors in the new school and enabled the purchase of a mobile metal detector that will be used at athletic events. A second grant from the Georgia Department of Health for $60,000 ($20,000 per school in the system) was used for the improvement of air quality and the health and safety of the students and staff.

In other business, the Board reluctantly accepted a letter of resignation from Bonnie Smiley, who is retiring from her position as Board office receptionist and accounts payable clerk. She has served in that position since 2001.The Board also agreed to hire Emily Carter as a paraprofessional and Superintendent Couey praised newly-hired school safety resource officer Willie Coney for his services.
