BPC Baseball Into HoF

The 1970 Brewton-Parker College (BPC) Baseball Team was inducted into the college’s Hall of Fame during Alumni Weekend on April 9. Twenty-six players and their coach, Tracy Rivers, were recognized for their achievements while at BPC as well as notable career events.

This team claimed the 1970 State Junior College Southern Regional Championship. The team’s overall record was 27-11, and their conference record was 13-3. After leaving BPC, seven players went on to sign professional baseball contracts, six players signed scholarships with major colleges, and numerous other players received scholarships to smaller colleges. Stan Fillion, Mike Burger, Alan Okun, and Dennis Holmberg were named to the State Junior College All-Conference Team. Two players, Stan Fillion and Neil Cannon were named to the State Junior College All-Tournament Team. Stan Fillion, the team captain, signed a scholarship with the University of Georgia and was also the captain of UGA's baseball team.

Cumi Fillion, the wife of 1970 Baseball Team player Stan Fillion, threw out the first pitch for BPC’s baseball game against Blue Mountain to honor members of the 1970 baseball team. The Barons wrapped up Alumni Weekend with a series win of 2-1 against Blue Mountain.

Neil Cannon, a member of the 1970 team stated, “The 1970 Brewton- Parker baseball team is one of the closest groups of baseball players ever assembled. We had a saying, ‘We are best friends, teammates and we will always be brothers for life’.” The 1970 team has held their own reunion for the last 3 years during BPC’s alumni week, “because of the love and fond memories we have of Brewton-Parker and our desire for BPC to continue to be a part of our lives.”
