Wheeler Wins 1 Over Telfair

The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs baseball team dropped two games of a three game Region series to Telfair County last week.

Game 1

In McRae on Tuesday the Bulldogs fell 11-6 to the Trojans. Wheeler got on the board first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Telfair scored one in the bottom of the first, but Wheeler answered with one more in the top of the second to lead 3-1. Telfair tied the game in the bottom of the second inning at 3-3 as they plated two runs. Wheeler took the lead back in the top of the third inning with two more runs, but Telfair scored five in the fourth inning as they went on top, 8-5. Both teams scored one run in the fifth, and Telfair added two more in the sixth as they took an 11-6 win over the Bulldogs.

Game 2

The two teams played a double header on Friday in Alamo and split the two games. In the first game of the day Wheeler took the win. Both teams scored one run in the second inning, but Wheeler added two more in the third to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs picked up another run in the fourth inning, but in the top of the fifth Telfair plated four runs to take a 5-4 lead over the Bulldogs.

In the bottom of the fifth Wheeler had a big inning as they scored eight runs to jump ahead 12-5. Telfair scored one run in the sixth, and Wheeler added two more as the Bulldogs took the win by the run rule, 14-6. Mason Ford led the Bulldogs with three hits and three RBI’s in the game. Layton Horne added two RBI’s in the game for the Bulldogs.

Game 3

The final game of the series went to the Trojans. They took the early lead with three in the first and two more in the second to go ahead 5-0. Wheeler scored a run in the fourth inning, but three more from Telfair in the top of the sixth gave them a 8-1 lead. Wheeler tried to make a late comeback as they scored two runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh, but Telfair added a run in the seventh and took the win, 9- 7. Walker Bridges led Wheeler with three RBI’s. This week Wheeler matches up with Montgomery County for a Region series. The Bulldogs are currently 5-9 on the year and are 5-8 in the Region. They played the first game on Tuesday after presstime and will play a double header in Mt. Vernon on Friday with the first game at 4:00 p.m.
