Owens Signs With Shorter
Last Monday at Vidalia High School, Indian standout athlete Konner Owens signed his letter of intent to play soccer for Shorter University in Rome. Owens is a two-time All-State selection and at the time of his signing had 38 career goals for the Indians. He was also a preseason All-State selection this season and is a three-time All-Region player. Owens has also been a part of the VHS basketball team that won their first Region Championship in seven years and has been an All-Region selection in that sport as well. Owens said, “My sister (Kourtnee) began her college career there and that led me there as well. After I talked to the coach, I definetly saw that Shorter was the place for me. They also have a great nursing program, which is what I want to pursue, and I really like the campus as well. I have to of course thank God, I have to thank my parents, my sister and her fiance, all of my family for all of their support, and of course my teammates and coaches. His mother Missy stated, “Proud is an understatement. It is just amazing. Just one of those moments that parents work so hard for and to see it come to fruition is just a blessing. We are thankful for everyone that has been a part of this journey. The coach and Konner just hit it off and I really think that this is going to be a good fit for him.”
VHS Coach Josh Harrell says that it’s not only Konner’s ability that makes him special. “He’s scored a ton of goals, but what makes him special is his work ethic, passion for competition, and the love for the game and his teammates. He’s what all coaches want in a player, and all fathers want in a son. He’s an outstanding soccer player, one of the best that have ever worn the Vidalia uniform, but more importantly, he’s an even better person. I am very blessed to get to work with such a fine young man.'
