Lady Barons Soar Past Skyhawks

Brewton-Parker College softball hosted Point (Ga.) on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader in Mount Vernon. The Lady Barons (11-7) soared past the Skyhawks (15-9) with a pair of wins.

Game 1

In the opening game of the two-game series, Point captured an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Skyhawks recorded two hits which included an RBI single to strike first. Brewton-Parker managed to find a single from Chloe Strickland, but the Lady Barons left her on base to close out the first inning. BPC held the Skyhawks from scoring in the second inning as Point had two runners on base. Brewton-Parker leveled the score with an RBI triple from Erika Yatabe to bring home Olivia Whitt. The Lady Barons recorded two hits and left a runner on. The Lady Barons captured control of the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to lead 3-1. Both Alexis Bradshaw and MacKenzie Tripp crossed the dish as BPC notched two hits to add upon the pair of miscues from the Skyhawks.

Point found redemption from the two errors by equalizing the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning, scoring two runs, and notching three hits. BPC was fortunate enough to keep any additional runs from scoring, forcing the Skyhawks to leave two runners on. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Lady Barons connected for two hits but failed to score with three runners left on base. After a swift and scoreless fifth inning, Brewton-Parker regained momentum in the bottom of the sixth inning. BPC opened with a single from Alexia Mays with Yatabe reaching on a fielder’s choice that put-out Mays. Yatabe advanced on a groundout before BryAnn Pound came into the order as a pinch hitter for Bradshaw. Pound connected on an RBI single that brought Yatabe home. With Pound on base, Strickland reached first on an error which Pound took advantage of by scoring to give BPC a 5-3 lead. The Lady Barons managed to close out the game in the top of the seventh inning unscathed to secure game one, 5-3. Brewton-Parker’s bats produced nine hits and four RBIs. A total of nine individual Lady Barons notched a hit apiece while four individuals each recorded an RBI. Five individuals scored runs as well. Defensively, BPC produced 21 putouts with Josalin Whitten leading with six. In the circle, Natalie Hardy pitched for seven innings. Hardy walked struck out five batters and walked two.

Game 2

Bre w t o n – Pa r k e r opened the game with a solo score in the bottom of the first inning. Strickland singled followed by Tripp hitting a double through the middle to advance Strickland to third. Abbey Flowers was credited with an RBI sacrifice fly-out to score Strickland for the early 1-0 lead.

The Lady Barons’ bats began warming up with three hits, but all three batters were left on base. Point scored the equalizer in the top of the third inning by taking advantage of a single and an error from BPC.

Both the fourth and fifth innings resulted in scoreless efforts from both sides forcing the game to remain all square while heading to the sixth inning. Brewton-Parker utilized three hits to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the six to take a 3-1 lead. Madisen Nelson reached on a single and advanced to second before Whitt connected for an RBI single to left field to bring in Nelson. Pound followed with a double to left to bring home Whitt for the second run. BPC held on in the top half of the seventh inning to seal the 3-1 victory.

Brewton-Parker outhit Point 9-4 with Whitt and Pound leading with two hits each. BPC totaled three RBIs as well. Tripp, Flowers, and Pound all recorded a double to help lead the batting efforts. On the defensive side of things, Nelson produced 11 putouts while Tripp produced five assists. Laykin Brown pitched for all seven innings and recorded one strikeout for the game.
