BPC Splits With Calumet

Brewton-Parker College baseball continued its weekend series against Calumet (Ind.) on Saturday with two seven-inning games on the schedule.

The Barons (6-14) secured the series over the Crimson Wave (4-6) with a 12-11 walk-off win in game two after dropping game one 6-4 to open the day.

Game 1

Brewton-Parker struck first in the opening inning, scoring two runs to lead early. A groundout RBI from Zach Wilson brought home Taz Worrell while Malik Germany recorded an RBI double to score Matt Collins. BPC recorded three hits in the inning and left a runner on base. Calumet finally broke through to score, recording one run on three hits while also taking advantage of an error from the Barons. The Crimson Wave awakened for five runs in the top of the fifth inning, claiming a 6-2 lead. BPC managed to score a run in the sixth and seventh innings to make the score 6-4 but could not produce enough offense.

Game 2

The Crimson Wave was the first one on the scoreboard in game two after scoring a run in the first inning. The Crimson Wave were primed to score additional runners but fortunately for BPC, the two runners were left on base.

Brewton-Parker answered in the bottom half of the first inning with two runs as Worrell reached with a leadoff single through the left side. After a few stolen bases and a walk, Collins grounded out to bring home Worrell and advance Tony Rudolph. Another groundout brought in Rudolph to give the Barons an early 2-1 lead.

Calumet scored a run off an RBI single to level the score at 2-2 in the second inning after opening the inning with two straight strikeouts. Similar to the opening inning, the Crimson Wave left two runners on base after recording a pair of hits.

After a scoreless effort in the third inning, Calumet took charge in the fourth inning by scoring six runs to capture the lead, 8-2. The Crimson Wave notched six hits in the inning and benefitted from another BPC error. The Barons answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer from Wilson to make the score 8-4.

In the fifth inning, Calumet tacked on an additional three runs off two hits as the Barons were finding some trouble on the mound which forced a pair of pitching changes. In the bottom half of the inning, Brewton-Parker gathered four hits and scored three runs to make the score 11-7. BPC recorded three-straight singles to push home one run with Worrell earning an RBI. Mackenzie McDowell scored from a groundout followed by Worrell crossing the dish from a Wilson single up the middle.

The Barons came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning after finding some energy from Matt Hager on the mound with three strikeouts in his first four at-bats. In the sixth inning, BPC scored four runs and recorded just one hit to level the score at 11-11. Calumet found struggles of their own from the mound as three Barons were walked, and one was hit by a pitch. In addition, BPC took advantage of two wild pitches and a passed ball to help the baserunners advance home.

A scoreless seventh inning from both sides forced extra innings with the eighth resulting in scoreless efforts as well. In the eighth inning, both teams notched a hit and left a runner on base. In the ninth inning, Hager added three more strikeouts to help close out the Crimson Wave’s chances before the Barons came up to bat. Wilson led with a fly-out to center field just prior to Germany’s atbat.

On a 1-0 count, Germany secured the series with a 430-foot walk-off homerun high above the center-field wall to boost the Barons past the Crimson Wave, 12-11 in an epic comeback performance after being down 11-4 four innings prior. Calumet outhit Brewton- Parker 13-9 in game two with Worrell and Wilson leading BPC with a pair of hits each. Wilson also led the Barons with four RBIs while Worrell and Collins both notched two apiece. Frasca, Mc-Dowell, and Worrell led with two runs each with Worrell picking up another pair of stolen bases. Smith recorded 13 putouts followed by DeMasi with six with Rudolph assisting three. On the mound, McDowell opened with 3.1 innings pitched. He gave up eight hits and four earned runs while striking out seven batters. Both Dakota Davis and PJ Ridgeway pitched for 0.2 innings before Hager finished the game throwing for 4.1 innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out eight batters in 14 at-bats.

The Barons hosted No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett on Tuesday after presstime.
