Wheeler Falls In 1st Round

The Bulldogs basketball team of Wheeler County High School took on Clinch County in the first round of the GHSA State A Public Playoffs last week. It was a big first quarter by the Panthers of Clinch that made the difference in the game.

Wheeler got on the board first, but a threepointer put Clinch on top. Wheeler took a 6-5 lead over the Panthers, but then a couple of turnovers put Clinch on top 12-6. They pushed that to a 21-8 lead by the end of the first quarter of the game.

In the second the Bulldogs got the offense working and kept pace with Clinch. At halftime the score was 40-28 with Wheeler trailing.

In the third quarter the Bulldogs went on a run as they closed in on the Panthers. Wheeler closed it to a five-point game at the end of the third, 48-43.

But in the fourth Clinch held on as they outscored Wheeler 20-18 to take a 68-61 win. The win ended the season for the Bulldogs with a record of 20-8. It was the best record for the Bulldogs in over a decade.
