Wheeler Boys Win 2

It was a busy week for the Bulldogs of Wheeler County High School as the basketball teams took on Fitzgerald, Treutlen County, and Vidalia last week. The girls dropped all three of their games, while the boys picked up two wins.

Girls vs. Fitzgerald

The Lady Bulldogs struggled against the Hurricanes of Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald ran away with the game and took a 78-16 win. Wheeler was led by Mahogany King with 11 points.

Boys vs. Fitzgerald

Wheeler was up 4-0 early in this game and then led 10-7 halfway through the first. Later in the third quarter of the game the Bulldogs were on top 32-20 over the Hurricanes. Wheeler had pushed their lead to 49-32 in the fourth and went on to take the win, 64-46.

Girls vs. Treutlen

Against Truetlen, the Lady Vikings led 12-4 at the end of the first and were on top 23-9 at the end of the first half. Treutlen outscored Wheeler 17-3 in the third quarter of the game and took the win over Wheeler 45-18.

Boys vs. Treutlen

The boys game was much closer as the Bulldogs had to fight for the win. Wheeler came out on top in this game 65-60 to get a win over their rival.

Girls vs. Vidalia

It was a tough game as the Lady Bulldogs were at Vidalia. Vidalia led the game 20-0 at the end of the first and held a 44-0 lead at halftime. Vidalia was on top 57-0 at the end of the third quarter and won the game 57-7.

Boys vs. Vidalia

Vidalia led 3-2 after a basket by Jay Fason, and then the Bulldogs tied the game at 4-4 with a shot by Brandon Smallwood. Vidalia went ahead and were up 14-4 with 3:10 left in the opening quarter. Teejay Wilcox and Fason closed it to 17-10, but at the end of the first, the score was 2010 with the Indians on top.

Smallwood and Fason closed it to 22-15, and it was 22-17 after two freethrows by Smallwood. Vidalia went on a run to make it 27-17, but Wilcox got a basket in the lane to close it to under 10 points at 27-19.

Jeremiah Kincy made a strong move in the lane as the first half was winding down and then made a freethrow to close the VHS lead to 37-30, but by the end of the half, the score was 4435 with VHS out in front.

Wheeler hung around throughout much of the second half keeping it close to a 10-point game. In the fourth they trailed 75-65, but the Indians went on a late run to take an 82-65 win over Wheeler.

This week Wheeler hosted Wilcox County on Tuesday after presstime. They will host Johnson County on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then will be at Telfair County on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
