TCHS Falls In 2nd Round

The Toombs County High School softball team saw their season come to an end in the second round of the GHSA State AA Playoffs last week as they lost a best-of-three series to Union County. Toombs was the #4 team out of Region 2, while Union was the #3 team out of Region 8. Toombs had a solid season, finishing with a record of 1715 as they continue to improve as a program.

Game 1

In the first game of the series in Blairsville near the Tennessee line, Toombs took the early lead. The Bulldogs put three runs on the board in the top of the first inning, but in the bottom half of the frame the Panthers answered with three runs to tie the game at 3-3.

In the second Union jumped ahead with four more runs to go up 7-3 on Toombs. Two more runs in the third inning for Union put them on top 9-3.

The Bulldogs did manage one more run in the game in the top of the fifth inning, but that was all they could get as they fell in the game, 9-4.

Brinley Miller led TCHS with 2 RBI's and Aniston Powell added t w o hits.

Game 2

Toombs was looking good early in the second game as they were trying to force a Game 3, but Union came back in the final two innings to take the win. Union scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Toombs came out in the bottom of the inning and plated five runs to jump out to a 5-2 lead. In the second inning the Bulldogs added another run to push their lead to 6-2. Neither team scored over the next two innings, and then in the sixth both teams added one run to their totals to make it a 7-3 game with TCHS on top. Bu in the top of the sixth inning Union scored three runs to close the lead to 7-6. TCHS needed to hold in the seventh, but Union got their bats going as they added seven more runs to take a 13-7 lead over the Bulldogs. In the bottom of the seventh TCHS couldn't make the comeback as they fell 13-7 to end their season. Kassidy Brantley and Arlie Gooden both had 3 RBI's for Toombs in the game with Gooden getting 4 hits in the contest. Toombs will be losing two seniors off of this year's team, Ziahya Griffen and Emma Salter.
