Vikings Upset Trojans

It was a big night for the Vikings football team of Treutlen County High School as they came from behind to defeat Telfair County last Friday night at home in Soperton. Telfair scored first with 6:43 on the clock as they capped off a drive with a short touchdown run. They added the extra point to hold a 7-0 lead over the Vikings. The Trojans of Telfair scored another touchdown on their next possession, this time on a 19-yard pass. They added the PAT for a 14-0 lead with just over two minutes to go in the opening quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff Tim Blair went 70 yards for a Treutlen touchdown. They missed the extra point, but closed the lead to 14-6. Blair had another big play, this time on defense, as he intercepted a pass and returned it to the 15yard line on the Trojans next offensive possession. Treutlen moved the ball down to the 1-yard line before Quen Jordan went in for the touchdown with 10 minutes left in the first half. Quarterback Jordan Coney hit PJ Smiley for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14.

Telfiar went back on top with just over six minutes to go in the half on a 7-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good to give them a 21-14 lead.

Treutlen answered with a 50-yard run by Coney, and added the extra point on a kick by Danny Clements to again tie the game, this time at 21-21.

Treutlen took their first lead of the game with just over three minutes to go in the half as Coney found Smiley for a 75-yard touchdown reception. They missed the extra point, but that put the Vikings on top 27-21.

In the third quarter Treutlen extended their lead with a 12-yard pass from Coney to Cooper Brantley. They tacked on the two-point conversion to lead 33-21 with 5:45 left in the third quarter.

The Vikings added to that lead with a touchdown run by Jordan, and then pushed it to 46-21 on a 70yard pass from Coney to Blair with just under five minutes to play in the game.

Telfair did score twice late in the game, but the Vikings held on for the 4635 win. Treutlen is now 2-3 on the year.

Treutlen will be off this week as they get ready for a rivalry matchup on October 8, against Wheeler County in Alamo.
