Jackets Get By Bulldogs

The Toombs County High School football team fell to the Yellow Jackets of Jeff Davis last Friday night in Hazlehurst. It was a tough game for Toombs as they struggled to get the offense going against the Region foe. In the first quarter of the game neither team got much going as they exchanged punts, but on the first play of the second quarter Jeff Davis got on the board on a halfback pass for 32 yards. They added the extra point to lead 7-0 over the Bulldogs. On the ensuing kickoff things went south for Toombs as the Yellow Jackets forced a fumble and recovered it at the Toombs 20-yard line. After picking up a first down inside the 10-yard line, the Yellow Jackets went in for the score on a 7-yard run. They added the extra point to lead 14-0 over Toombs with 9:11 left in the first half of play. After exchanging punts, Toombs had the ball at their own 32-yard line with just over five minutes to go in the half. Chandler Lyunn hit DJ Mincey on a short pass, but Mincey broke free and went 68 yards for a touchdown for Toombs. There was a bad snap on the PAT and Toombs did not get the kick with Jeff Davis leading 14-6.

After the ensuing kickoff the Jackets broke lose for a long run all the way to the Toombs 10-yard line to set up another touchdown. With 3:30 left in the half, JD was in for another score, putting them on top 21-6. And that was the score at the end of the first half.

In the third quarter of the game the Jackets added another touchdown to push their lead to 28-6. Toombs and JD both scored in the fourth quarter as Toombs fell to Jeff Davis, 35-13.

TCHS is now 5-2 on the season and they are 1-1 in the Region. This week is rivalry week for Toombs as they will be at Vidalia on Friday night with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
