Woman Killed in Wreck on Wheeler Co. Road

A Wheeler County woman was killed and her husband seriously injured in a wreck on a county road that may have been caused by an encounter with a deer. Rebekah Rowland, 37, died at the scene of the mishap which occurred Saturday, September 26 around 10:25 p.m. on Cattle Road near Spring Hill in Wheeler County. She was a passenger in a Polaris off-road vehicle being operated by her husband, Bobby Eugene Rowland, 50.

The Georgia State Patrol, which investigated, reported that the vehicle was traveling south on Cattle Road when it began to yaw to the left toward the east ditch then overturned. Mrs. Rowland was ejected from the vehicle which landed on top of her. Rowland was partially ejected but remained in the cabin of the vehicle.

Fresh deer tracks were noted in the roadway at the approximate location of the beginning of the yaw marks. The report said these tracks indicated that a deer traveled from west to east across the roadway sometime shortly before or after the crash.

Rowland was taken to Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin and later transferred to Macon for treatment of his injuries.
