Wheeler Splits With Pierce & Treutlen
The Wheeler County High School Lady Bulldogs softball team played two games last week, splitting those contests. Wheeler fell to Pierce County on Tuesday on the road in Blackshear, but bounced back with a win over rival Treutlen County on Thursday at home. vs. Pierce Co.
The Lady Bulldogs' week started with a tough road game against the Lady Bears, resulting in an 8-2 loss. The Bears' offense was strong, scoring five runs in the second inning alone. Wheeler plated two runs in the top of the third inning, but another run from Pierce in the bottom fo the frame made the score 6-2.
Pierce added two more runs in the fifth inning on the way to the 8-2 win.
In the circle for the Lady Bulldogs, Ava Dixon gave up six hits and six runs (three earned) over three innings, striking out four and walking three. Offensively, Mackenzie Johnson led Wheeler County with two runs batted in. vs. Treutlen Co.
Wheeler County bounced back on Thursday with a dominant 9-0 victory over the Lady Vikings. Ava Dixon was the star of the game, pitching a shutout. She racked up 12 strikeouts and allowed only one hit and four walks over six innings.
Wheeler took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a 2-RBI single from Shelley Conner. Wheeler didn't add to their lead until the fifth inning when the scored five more runs. RBI hits came from Conner, Kaleigh Scott, Anna Ethredge, and Kaitlyn Conner. That put the Bulldogs on top, 7-0. Rozilynn Cox also contributed with a two-run homer in the sixth inning as Wheeler won the game, 9-0.
Wheeler is now 11-4 on the season, and they are 5-1 in Region play. This week they were at Fitzgerald on Monday and hosted Telfair County on Tuesday, both after presstime. They will be back in action on Thursday at home against Wilcox County at 5:00 p.m.
