A new U.S. Highway 1 detour will begin on Tuesday morning, July 8, and will be in place for several months, as the construction of the U.S. Highway 1 Bypass Project continues.
The detour features a new all way stop at the U.S. 1 Connector, which is located at the intersection of the highway and Scarlet Road between Lyons and Baxley. Drivers traveling northbound will detour onto the new southbound lanes of the Bypass, then will stop at the Connector. Drivers will turn right onto the connector, then turn left onto the existing U.S. Highway 1 to continue heading towards Lyons.
Southbound drivers will stop on the existing U.S. Highway 1’s intersection with the new connector, and turn right onto the roadway. They will then turn left onto the Bypass, traveling towards Baxley until the road reconnects with the existing highway.
The area of the detour is considered a work zone, and drivers are encouraged to exercise extreme caution and reduce their speed when traveling through the region. Message signs, barrels, and cones will be in place to help guide drivers through the new flow of traffic.
