The Toombs County High School basketball teams faced off with Montgomery County last week. TCHS was at MCHS on Tuesday of last week and then hosted the Eagles on Friday.

Girls vs. MCHS

The Lady Bulldogs trailed MCHS 17-3 at the end of the first quarter, and found themselves down 36-9 at halftime.

MCHS continued to pull away in the second half of the game on the way to a 57-27 victory.

Boys vs. MCHS

The Toombs County Boys Basketball team came off of a brief break and picked up where they left off going into Thanksgiving. The Hoop Dawgs took the brief bus ride over to Montgomery County and picked up a good road victory Tuesday night.

The two teams traded baskets early on highlighted by a thunderous dunk by Marion James after breaking some pressure from Montgomery. Toombs continued having success in the first quarter and put themselves ahead after the first quarter leading 14-6.

The second quarter started out strong again for the Hoop Dawgs, and the lead was stretched out to a 12-point lead before the Eagles of Montgomery County closed out the quarter on a run and made it 22-16 in favor of the Dawgs at halftime.

The Dawgs came out strong in the third quarter and turned up the defensive pressure and found some rhythm offensively. Jesus Quintero started the third quarter strong and scored seven quick points to open the quarter. The defensive effort continued holding the Eagles to just seven points, and the Dawgs held a 37-23 lead after three quarters.

The last quarter was similar to the third with the defensive effort continuing to be strong. The Dawgs held the Eagles to just five points in the final quarter while scoring seventeen themselves. The final score ended up 54-28 in favor of the Dawgs.

The Dawgs were led by Jesus Quintero, who had 20 points and 8 rebounds on the night. Dominic Eason added 12 points and 7 rebounds. As a team, the Dawgs dominated the offensive glass totaling 31 on the night, and defensively, forced 28 turnovers.

Girls vs. MCHS

It was another tough game for TCHS as they trailed 6-2 after the first and were down 20-4 at halftime.

The Eagles outscored Toombs 19-1 in the third and picked up the win, 4311, over the Bulldogs.

Boys vs. MCHS

In a matchup for the second time this week, Toombs County once again came out on top against Montgomery County. The game started out with both teams needing some time to get the offense going. After the first three minutes of the game, the Dawgs got on the scoreboard and settled in. Toombs stretched the lead out in the first quarter to as much as seven, but the Eagles kept chipping away and kept it close. After trading a pair of 3-point baskets, the Dawgs held a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter started similarly with both teams trading baskets and the Eagles keeping within reach. At the 5:48 mark in the second quarter, it was 18-14. This is the point where the Dawgs turned up the defensive pressure and outscored the Eagles 15-1 to take a 32-15 halftime lead.

The third and fourth quarters brought similar play from the Dawgs. Great defensive and timely scoring helped the Dawgs maintain the lead and stretch it to as much as a 30-point lead. After the third quarter, the score was 50-28. When the final buzzer sounded the scoreboard was in favor of the Dawgs at 64-39.

The Dawgs were led by Demetrius Cutler, who chipped in with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Dominic Eason continued to play well contributing 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Jesus Quintero joined them in double figures scoring 11 points and pulling down 7 rebounds.

The Boy’s program had a good night overall with the JV team winning their second game of the week, also against Montgomery County, with a score of 50-33.

Toombs was at home on Tuesday of this week after presstime against Bleckley County. They will be back in action on Saturday with the Tigers of Metter coming to town at 2:30 p.m.
