Game 1
The Brewton-Parker Christian University (BPCU) Barons baseball team traveled to take on the Crusaders of William Carey University (Miss.) on March 20. The Barons struggled in the series opener, dropping the game 11-1 in seven innings.
The Barons struck first at the top of the first inning, cashing in a quick scoring opportunity. Zach Carlton reached and came around to score on a single to right field from Caleb Strott, giving Brewton-Parker a 1-0 advantage. That early run, however, turned out to be the team’s only offense of the night against William Carey right-hander Matthew Davis.
The Crusaders quickly scored two runs at the bottom of the first inning to take a lead that would last for the remainder of the game. Brewton-Parker’s pitchers were forced to work under traffic most of the night as William Carey scored in six of the seven innings played. A pair of sacrifice flies in the fifth widened the gap to 6-1, and another sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 7-1. The Crusaders scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to run-rule the Barons.
Game 2
The Brewton-Parker Christian University (BPCU) Barons baseball team played a doubleheader against the Crusaders of William Carey University on the road. The Barons struggled offensively in game one, unable to generate much offense. The Crusaders took game one 8-1. The Barons rallied in game two but still fell short, dropping it 6-5.
Game one saw the Crusaders plate a run in the first on a run-scoring groundout, then broke the game open in the third with seven runs, using four doubles and a run-scoring single to create a dominant lead. The Barons kept the game clean defensively with no errors and stranded five Crusaders, but the single crooked inning provided all the offense the Crusaders needed. The Barons’ pitching staff worked 6.0 innings in the seven-inning contest, allowing five hits while striking out three on 100 pitches. Offensively, Brewton- Parker collected four hits and drew four walks but was held to one run. Raul Morales provided a bright spot at the plate with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, leading the Barons at the plate.
Game 3
The Barons responded with a stronger offensive effort in the nightcap, pushing across five runs on five hits in a 6-5 loss that went down to the late innings. After falling behind 2-0 in the first, Brewton- Parker capitalized on a William Carey miscue and a passed ball in the third to pull even at 2-2. The Barons then grabbed their first lead of the day in the fourth when Jack Morris doubled down the leftfield line to score Jeremi Lara, giving Brewton-Parker a 3-2 advantage.
William Carey answered with a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to move in front 5-3, but Brewton-Parker continued to rally. In the seventh, Michael Son delivered the biggest swing of the day for the Barons with a solo home run to right field as part of a two-run frame that pushed Brewton- Parker back on top, 5-4. The Barons drew six walks in the contest and left seven runners on base, consistently pressuring the Crusaders’ pitching staff throughout the game. William Carey tied the game in the sixth-inning surge and then manufactured the game-winning run in the eighth.
The Barons will return to Mount Vernon and get ready to host the Wolf Pack from Loyola University (La.) in a three-game conference series starting on March 27, with a doubleheader.
