The City of Vidalia also issued a burn ban on Tuesday, January 13, as they outlawed open burning within the city until further notice. The ban cites dry fuel sources, low humidity, and increased wind as the reason for the ban, and assures that the temporary legislation will be strictly enforced.

Higgston Fire Chief Chris McLendon also urged citizens in the surrounding areas not to burn as he stated, “Fires can start easily and spread rapidly, even with light winds. Report any smoke or fire immediately. Your cooperation is critical to protecting lives, homes, and our community.”

Agencies assured that the public would be updated when conditions changed, but encouraged the community to remain cautious and vigilant in their activities.
