Toombs Overpowers Thomasville to Advance in State Playoffs

The Toombs County Bulldogs went on the road last week and battled their way into the second round of the GHSA State Baseball Playoffs, taking a hardfought, best-of-three series against the Thomasville Bulldogs. After splitting a Thursday doubleheader, Toombs County returned to the diamond on Friday to deliver a dominant, decisive performance in game three.
Game 1
In the series opener on Thursday, Toombs County established control early. A three-run surge in the top of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Brody Benton, set the tone for the afternoon.
Joseph Owens kept the momentum going with a hit in the second inning to bring in another run. The Bulldogs maintained the pressure, pushing two more runs across in the fourth and another pair in the seventh to build a commanding 8-0 advantage.
Thomasville finally managed to get on the board with a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but Toombs easily secured the 8-2 victory.
Game 2 The second half of Thursday's doubleheader proved to be a much tougher test. The Toombs County bats went quiet against a stingy Thomasville pitching performance. Joseph Owens managed the lone hit for Toombs, breaking up a potential nohitter, but the offense couldn't string anything else together.
Meanwhile, Thomasville found their rhythm, scoring three runs in the top of the third inning and tacking on an insurance run in the seventh to hand Toombs a 4-0 shutout and force a winner-take-all game three.
Game 3
With their season on the line Friday, Toombs County responded emphatically. The offense erupted for nine runs in the very first inning, effectively putting the game out of reach before Thomasville could even settle in. The rally started when Brody Benton forced the first run across by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Lawton Toole immediately followed with an RBI single, and MJ Burton then ripped a two-run double. Owens kept the line moving with another RBI single of his own. The major blow came from Nick Carroll, who lined a basesloaded single that, compounded by a pair of Thomasville errors, completely cleared the bases and brought in four runs. That sequence put Toombs up 9-0.
Thomasville managed to scratch out a single run in the bottom half of the inning, but Toombs County didn't let up. They added four more runs in the fourth and plated another two in the fifth, cruising to a 15-1 win to punch their ticket to the second round.
The road does not get any easier for the Bulldogs. This week, they travel to take on the Gordon Lee Trojans, who entered the playoffs ranked as the #1 team in the state with an imposing 30-2 record. The second-round matchup begins with a doubleheader on Thursday starting at 4:00 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played on Friday.
