The Vidalia High School Lady Indians tennis team delivered an impressive performance at last week’s Region 3A-1 Tournament, finishing third overall behind strong private school programs, Savannah Country Day and St. Vincent’s Academy. Despite the stiff competition, the Lady Indians showcased depth, resilience, and standout individual performances throughout the tournament.
Leading the charge was senior standout Laylah Brantley at 1st Singles, who turned in a flawless performance by winning all three of her matches. Brantley’s consistency, strategic shot placement, and composure under pressure proved to be a major asset for Vidalia, as she set the tone for the team’s success.
At 2nd Singles, Elizabeth Sowell also played a pivotal role, securing two out of three victories. Sowell demonstrated grit and determination, battling through competitive matches and delivering key points when it mattered most.
Rounding out the singles lineup, Annalynn Helms at 3rd Singles contributed significantly to the team’s finish, also winning two of her three matches. Helms showed steady improvement and confidence, helping solidify the Lady Indians’ strong showing across all singles positions.
The Lady Indians’ third-place finish is especially noteworthy considering the strength of the region, which includes some of the top private school programs in the state. Competing at a high level against these teams, Vidalia proved they can contend with some of the best.
With momentum from the region tournament, the Lady Indians now turn their attention to postseason play, carrying confidence and experience into the next phase of their season. As the team continues its pursuit of success, one thing is clear — the Lady Indians are a program on the rise, fueled by leadership, determination, and a strong foundation of talent.
The Lady Indians carried that momentum into the state playoffs, where their strong region finish earned them the No. 13 seed in the GHSA Class A Division I state tournament. Vidalia opened postseason play in dominant fashion against the Hurricanes of Fitzgerald.
In a commanding 4-0 sweep, the Lady Indians left no doubt, controlling matches across the board. At 1st Singles, Laylah Brantley continued her outstanding play, delivering a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory. Elizabeth Sowell followed suit at 2nd Singles with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win, showcasing consistency and aggressive play. Annalynn Helms added another point at 3rd Singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 to help secure the team victory.
At 1st Doubles, seniors Deidra Boston and Sadie Berry provided a clutch performance in a tightly contested match. The duo battled through a first-set tiebreak, winning 7-6 (7-2), before closing out the match 6-4 to complete the sweep for Vidalia.
The decisive victory propels the Lady Indians into the “Sweet 16”, second round of the state playoffs. The Lady Indians were in Rome on Monday of this week after presstime to take on Armuchee.
