Officers initially treated the incident like a potential attempted kidnapping and began questioning witnesses. After several witness statements were found to be inconsistent, the Department worked to gain more information by conducting follow-up interviews. After reviewing information given in these interviews and reviewing the facts that had been collected on the case, police now believe the incident was not an attempted abduction, but a misunderstanding that stemmed from a safety concern.

The Department commented on the case, as they stated, “We want to be very clear: the parents did exactly what we want our citizens to do. When a child reports an interaction that causes concern, it must be taken seriously. We appreciate the family’s quick reporting, which allowed our officers to respond and fully investigate the situation.”

The Department also emphasized their commitment to keeping the community safe, especially when using city facilities, and encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any activity in the city which seems out of the ordinary or suspicious. “While we cannot always share every detail of an investigation due to privacy considerations, evolving information, or initial inaccuracies, the safety of our citizens remains our primary concern and the foundation of everything we do,” Chief Rob Shore remarked.

The case is now officially considered to be closed and the Department reassured that there is no immediate threat to the community.
