Bulldogs Drop Series to Raiders

The Toombs County Bulldogs baseball team faced a tough test last week, dropping two out of three games in a Region series against the Savannah Christian Academy Raiders. The series loss drops Toombs County into a tie for second place in the Region standings with neighboring Vidalia. The Bulldogs now sit at 12-10 overall on the season and carry a 4-2 mark in Region play.

Game 1

The series opened on a rough note Monday as Toombs County fell 15-0. Savannah Christian took control early, plating three runs in the first inning and adding two more in the second. The Raiders then broke the game wide open in the third with a five-run frame highlighted by a grand slam, before adding five final runs in the fourth. Ryder Sears took the loss on the mound. Offensively, Ty Hutchinson and Joseph Owens managed the only hits for the Bulldogs, though the defense did execute a double play.

Following the shutout, head coach Derek James kept his message straightforward. “We ran into a really good team tonight, but this one’s behind us,” James said. “We’ve got to regroup, clean up a few things, and be ready to compete better the next time out.”

Game 2

Toombs got back to work on Wednesday. Hutchinson delivered a dominant performance on the mound, tossing a complete- game one-hitter to lead Toombs County to a crucial 1-0 victory. In a pitcher's duel where Savannah Christian’s Ethan Jones allowed just one unearned run over five innings to take the tough-luck loss, Hutchinson kept the Raiders off balance all night, yielding just the single hit while striking out five.

The Bulldogs pushed across the game’s lone run in the fifth inning, capitalizing on an opportunity to break the scoreless tie. Nick Carroll, Sears, Hutchinson, and Cam Brown each recorded hits, and the defense backed up Hutchinson with another key double play.

“Ty was outstanding tonight—he controlled the game from start to finish,” James said of his starter's effort. “It was a great response by our guys, and we found a way to win a tight one.”

Game 3

Unfortunately for Toombs County, they could not replicate that success in Thursday's rubber match. Savannah Christian took control immediately in the bottom of the first inning, putting five runs on the board. The Raiders added four more in the second to build a commanding 9-0 advantage. The Bulldogs showed some fight, scratching across two runs in the top of the third and adding two more in the seventh, but the early deficit was too much to overcome in a 9-4 defeat.

The Bulldogs will look to get back on track this week with a pivotal threegame Region series against the Swainsboro Tigers. The series opened Tuesday in Lyons after press time. Toombs County will travel to Swainsboro for game two on Thursday at 5:45 p.m., before returning home to close out the series Friday evening at 5:45 p.m.
