Wheeler Bulldogs Stumble in Tough 4-Game Stretch
The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs baseball team faced a grueling slate last week, dropping four consecutive matchups, including three Region contests. The challenging stretch brings the Bulldogs' overall season record to 4-5. The week included road games at Telfair, Atkinson, and Wilcox counties, alongside a home contest against Wilcox. vs. Telfair Co.
The week began on Monday on the road against the Telfair County Trojans. Wheeler struck first in the top of the fourth inning when Rhett McCranie drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. However, Telfair responded aggressively in the bottom of the fifth, plating five runs to seize control. The Trojans added an insurance run in the sixth. Despite the Bulldogs rallying to push two more runs across in the top of the seventh, they ultimately fell short in a 6-3 defeat. vs. Wilcox Co.
On Tuesday, Wheeler returned home to host Wilcox County, but the Patriots controlled the diamond from the first pitch. Wilcox built an early 8-0 advantage by scoring two runs in the first inning, four in the second, and two in the third. The game then blew wide open in the top of the fourth inning when Wilcox exploded for an 18-run rally. Wheeler managed to cross the plate once in the bottom half of the frame, but Wilcox walked away with a dominant 26-1 victory. vs. Atkinson Co.
The Bulldogs hit the road again Thursday to face the Atkinson County Rebels. Atkinson jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Wheeler got on the board in the top of the third, but the Rebels answered immediately in the bottom half and added three more in the fourth to make it an 8-1 game. The Bulldogs showed serious resilience late in the contest, scoring a run in the fifth and erupting for five more in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to a single run at 8-7. Unfortunately, the comeback bid was halted when Atkinson answered with a massive seven-run bottom of the sixth to secure a 15-7 win. vs. Wilcox Co.
To wrap up the demanding week, Wheeler traveled to face Wilcox County once more on Friday. The Patriots' offense stayed hot, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame. They consistently added to their tally with four runs in the second, three in the third, and a final two runs in the fourth inning, handing the Bulldogs a 12-0 shutout loss.
Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will aim to get back in the win column with three games on the schedule this week. Wheeler will host Clinch County on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., travel to Bacon County on Thursday for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch, and finish the week on Friday at 6:00 p.m. against Tattnall County in Reidsville.
