The Soperton/ Treutlen County Fire Department was one of several agencies to run to the aid of Emanuel County Fire Department, as a salvage yard went up in flames.
Several cars began to burn on Tuesday afternoon, March 10, as a brush fire on Highway 80 East became uncontrollable and began to ignite vehicles at Hadden’s Wrecking, located at 1523 U.S. Highway 80 in Swainsboro. By the time the Swainsboro and Twin City Fire Departments arrived, around 20 vehicles were engulfed by the blaze.
All Emanuel County Fire Departments were dispatched to the fire, and because of the blaze’s size and the lack of fire hydrants, several agencies – including Soperton/Treutlen County Fire – were requested to assist.
Soperton/ Treutlen County firefighters joined Bulloch County Fire, Statesboro Fire, Metter Fire, Adrian Fire, Hancock State Prison Fire, the Georgia Forestry Commission, Georgia State Patrol Aviation Unit, and numerous law enforcement agencies in the effort extinguish the fire. Around 250,000 gallons of water were pumped into the area from assisting agencies’ tankers and from the nearby creek.
The blaze destroyed between 500 and 750 vehicles, making the salvage area a complete loss.
