Tough Week on the Pitch for Wheeler
It was a challenging week for the Wheeler County High School soccer programs, as both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs faced a grueling pair of region matchups. The teams hit the road on Tuesday to take on the Hawkinsville Red Devils before returning home on Friday to host the Dooly County Bobcats, ultimately dropping all four contests to slide further down the standings. vs. Hawkinsville
The week began with a tough test in Hawkinsville. In the girls' matchup, the Lady Bulldogs battled fiercely but ultimately fell short in a tight 2-1 contest against the Red Devils. The boys' team experienced a nearly identical fate in their game, dropping a closely contested 2-1 decision to Hawkinsville to close out the Tuesday road trip.
Girls vs. Dooly
Returning home on Friday, the Lady Bulldogs found themselves locked in a gritty defensive struggle against the Lady Bobcats of Dooly County. Neither team managed to find the back of the net in the first half, sending the game scoreless into the break. The offensive intensity finally picked up in the second half, with each squad netting a goal to tie things up at 1-1 at the end of regulation. However, in the overtime period, Dooly County found an extra gear, scoring twice to take the win over Wheeler County, 3-1.
Boys vs. Dooly
The boys' matchup against Dooly County proved to be a significantly tougher outing. The Bobcats' offense surged right out of the gate, putting up four goals in the first half of the game. The Bulldogs' defense continued to face relentless pressure throughout the second half, yielding four more goals as Dooly County cruised to an 8-0 shutout victory over Wheeler. Following last week's results, the Lady Bulldogs now sit at 1-6 overall and 1-3 in Region play. The boys' record shifts to 2-6 overall with a 1-2 mark in the Region. Both squads looked to bounce back on the road against Montgomery County on Tuesday, which concluded after presstime. The teams will be back in action this Friday as they travel to face Georgia Military College, with kickoff starting at 5:30 p.m.
