Montgomery County and Toombs County Fire Departments worked together to extinguish a wildfire that burnt over 60 acres on Wednesday, March 11.

Higgston Fire Department was dispatched to an out-of-control brush fire at 2105 Highway 135 in Montgomery County at 2:10 p.m. on March 11. Upon arriving, firefighters found a field and nearby wooded area burning. The responders began to work to extinguish the fire within the field first, but while they were working on containing the flames, the winds increased and changed direction, causing fire to spread rapidly through the woods towards Highway 130. The fire continued to spread, eventually jumping the highway and spreading into Toombs County.

Higgston Fire Department, Toombs County Fire Department, the Georgia Forestry Commission, Montgomery State Prison Fire Department, and Tarrytown Fire Department all worked together through extremely difficult conditions – heavy smoke and zero visibility – to subdue the fire, put out smaller spot fires, and protect nearby structures.

Montgomery County and Toombs County sheriff’s deputies and the Toombs- Montgomer y EMS paramedics responded to the call, as they helped to support the firefighters and prohibit traffic from coming into the area.

The fire was contained by 7:30 p.m. No injuries were reported, but a total of 69.20 acres were burnt in the blaze.
