Kingston Ryals, a senior at Vidalia City Comprehensive High School in Vidalia, has been named the winner of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Georgia Voice of Democracy Program, earning top honors in the statewide patriotic essay and audio speech competition.

The Voice of Democracy program invites high school students across the nation to write and record an original audio essay on a patriotic theme. Each year, thousands of students compete for scholarships and recognition through the long-running initiative sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Ryals’ winning entry advanced through multiple levels of competition, beginning at the local Lanier-Moore VFW Post 5745 and continuing through district judging before reaching the state level. The contest challenges students to reflect on democratic ideals and the meaning of citizenship through a recorded speech.

At Vidalia City Comprehensive High School, Ryals is known for his leadership and academic achievements. In addition to his success in the Voice of Democracy program, he has earned recognition for his involvement in youth leadership programs and community service, representing his school and community in numerous statewide initiatives.

School officials and community members praised Ryals for his accomplishment, noting that the honor reflects both his dedication and the strong tradition of student leadership within the Vidalia school system.

By winning the Georgia VFW Department competition, Ryals joins an elite group of students recognized for their thoughtful perspectives on American ideals and civic responsibility. The Voice of Democracy program, established in 1947, continues to encourage young Americans to engage with the principles of democracy while competing for scholarships and educational opportunities.

As the Georgia State winner, Ryals will now move to National VFW Judging and compete with 53 other department winners for the honor of 1st Place and $35,000.00 in scholarship prize money at the National Level.

Ryals’ achievement highlights the impact that motivated students can have when they use their voices to share ideas about patriotism, leadership, and the future of the nation.
