The Toombs County High School Orchestra recently made their competitive debut at the Georgia Music Educators Association Large Group Performance Evaluation in Savannah.

This event marked the first time that the orchestra has performed at a large group performance evaluation, which judges bands based on their ability to perform together and to sight-read music. During the event, judges will evaluate the performances, make comments and suggestions for improvement, and help to further develop these young musicians’ abilities.

“The Orchestra at Toombs County High School is proud to celebrate a successful first year of performance and growth. Although the program is small, it is steadily expanding and represents a unique opportunity for students in our county, where both band, chorus and orchestra are offered as part of the fine arts curriculum. We are especially grateful for the continued support of our Board of Education, school administrators and parents whose commitment has made this program possible,” Toombs County High School Band Director Noah Bullard remarked. “This semester, the Orchestra participated in Large Group Performance Evaluation in Savannah, hosted by the Georgia Music Educators Association. This event provides the opportunity for ensembles to be evaluated on their musical performance and technical development.”

The competition was tough, as the band competed against several other schools in District 1 of the Georgia Music Educators Association, such as Richmond Hill High School and the Savannah Arts Academy. Yet, Bullard said that the students are all winners because of their ability to rise to the challenge and learn a new type of music in a short period of time.

“What makes this accomplishment especially meaningful is that these students began the year as absolute beginners. After six months of dedicated preparation, they successfully performed on the evaluation stage—an impressive milestone for a first-year program. We are incredibly proud of their growth, perseverance, and commitment to their craft, and we look forward to the continued development of the Orchestra program in the years ahead,” Bullard emphasized.
