Vikings Secure State Playoff Spot

The Treutlen County High School Vikings boys basketball team faced a tough stretch in the Region Tournament. They dropped a pair of hard-fought games but still secured the #4 seed out of their Region heading into the GHSA State Playoffs. vs. Wheeler Co.

In the semifinals, the Vikings squared off against the Bulldogs of Wheeler County. Wheeler took early control of the matchup, establishing a 16-10 lead by the end of the first period.

The Bulldogs kept their momentum going, extending their advantage to 36-25 by halftime. A dominant third quarter by Wheeler pushed the score to 57-39.

Despite Treutlen's best efforts to close the gap in the final stretch, Wheeler controlled the pace. The Bulldogs closed out the game with a 70-57 victory. vs. Hawkinsville

That loss sent the Vikings into the consolation game, where they battled the Hawkinsville Red Devils in an absolute nail-biter. Treutlen came out firing, jumping out to a 21-16 lead in the opening period.

Hawkinsville rallied in the second quarter, fighting back to make it a tight 32-31 Vikings lead at the half. The third period featured intense, back-and-forth action that ended in a 48-48 deadlock.

In the decisive fourth quarter, the Red Devils managed to seize the lead. They held off a late push from the Vikings to claim a narrow 6259 win.

Despite the tough finish to the region tournament, the Vikings' season continues. This week, Treutlen hits the road for the first round of the GHSA State Tournament.

They will travel to face another set of Red Devils— this time in Bowdon—on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
