The Brewton-Parker Christian University Lady Barons hosted the Point University Skyhawks on February 21, in Gillis Gymnasium to wrap up the regular season and celebrate their seniors. The Lady Barons rolled, taking down the Skyhawks 76-62 to head into the postseason with a win after honoring four seniors.
The first quarter saw a closely contested matchup and had the Lady Barons take a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Brewton-Parker began to create separation in the second. The Lady Barons outscored the Skyhawks 21-17 in the frame, capped by a late layup from senior Sydney Beasley that pushed the margin to 3530 at the half. That late basket marked the start of a stretch in which Brewton Parker steadily dictated tempo, using its depth and pressure defense to wear down the visitors.
The game’s turning point came in the third quarter, when the Lady Barons clamped down defensively and turned turnovers into transition points. Brewton-Parker posted a 24-14 advantage in the quarter. A steal led to a layup by senior Jasmine Leynard with 59 seconds left, stretching the lead to 58-41 and pushing the margin firmly into double digits. From there, the Barons carried a 59-44 cushion into the fourth quarter and never allowed Point to seriously threaten.
Brewton-Parker’s defense was a key factor throughout, forcing 28 turnovers and converting them into scoring chances while collecting 14 steals. The Barons also controlled the glass with a 34-27 rebounding advantage, including 17 offensive boards. Andrian Stewart led the Lady Barons in points with 16, while her sister Andranique Stewart, the senior, led the team in rebounds with 11. The Lady Barons also saw contributions from senior Kaziah Terrell, who scored 12 points and grabbed two rebounds.
Head Coach Steve Edwards reflected on the game, saying, “It’s always good to win on senior day. We wanted a little momentum heading into the conference tournament. I’m hopeful we will play our best basketball of the year starting next week.”
The Lady Barons are set to face off against the University of Mobile Rams on Wednesday of this week, at the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.
